Large sites, short trips
Much of the freight activity around Castle Donington is concentrated on a handful of very large sites. East Midlands Gateway spreads over 700 acres in the parishes of Kegworth, Lockington-Hemington and Long Whatton and Diseworth, with its warehouse plots let to online retailers, parcel carriers and third-party logistics firms. The East Midlands Distribution Centre, on the site of the coal-fired power station that closed in 1994, is a major retail distribution hub, and Pegasus Business Park sits within the airport grounds. On sites like these a faulty vehicle often has nowhere it needs to go. It needs a technician to come to it.
What a yard visit looks like
A driver's walkaround turns up a leaking air coupling on a trailer, a lamp cluster that has died, a chafed suzie or a tyre that won't pass. Rather than shunting the trailer off site, we bring the fittings and tools to the bay, carry out the repair and record it so it lines up with the defect report. Electrical and charging faults, damaged tyres that make a vehicle unsafe to move, and the connections between unit and trailer that stop a load leaving the yard are all routine mobile work. Where the cause isn't obvious, we test before we replace anything.
Booking around the shift pattern
Planned mobile visits are arranged by phone on 01332 916028 at a time that suits the operation, overnight if that is when the vehicle is free. If an inspection left a list of advisories across a group of trailers, it is often easier for us to work through them on site than for you to send each one away in turn.
When it needs to come in
Some jobs need a vehicle on lifts: major components, structural work or anything that calls for heavy workshop equipment. If we find that on site, we say so before starting rather than leaving a repair that won't last, and we either recover the vehicle or book it into our workshop at Calke Mill Farm, Ashby Road, Melbourne, which handles planned work Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 17:00.
Faults that happen out on the road, on the A50, the M1 or the A453, go to the same number at any hour, and the same approach applies: fix it where it is if that can be done safely.
