Guesswork is expensive
A dashboard warning tells the driver something is wrong, not what. On a modern truck, coach or van, the same light can come from a sensor, a wiring fault, a control unit or a genuine mechanical failure, and the parts bill for guessing wrong adds up quickly. Our approach is to read what the vehicle reports, test the system concerned, and confirm the cause before a single part is fitted.
Faults we trace
Engine faults and derates that cut power or strand a vehicle. Electrical problems in wiring, connectors, lighting and charging. No-starts and fuel contamination, which tend to show up on the first cold mornings. Air and brake warnings and pressure loss. Clutch and gearbox symptoms that come before a failure. Overheating and coolant loss. And, increasingly, emissions faults: AdBlue problems, sensor failures and exhaust after-treatment trouble that can drop a vehicle into reduced power with little warning. Topping up the tank or clearing the code rarely deals with what caused it.
Faults that depend on the road
Nottingham work gives intermittent faults plenty of places to hide. A van that runs perfectly on a short loop between drops in Lenton and Hyson Green may only show its fault after a long, hot run on the M1. A tractor unit might derate on the A46 out past Saxondale and be fine by the time it is back in the city. The way to catch a fault like that is patience and good information: when it happens, how often, hot or cold, at idle or under load, at what speed, and what the driver heard, smelt or felt. A photo of the dashboard is useful, and so is anything that changed recently, such as a refuel, a repair or a different trailer.
Where the diagnosis happens
Our technicians carry diagnostic equipment, so many faults are found and fixed wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether that is a lay-by on the A453, the hard shoulder near junction 25 or your own yard. If the fault needs more time, or the vehicle has to go on lifts, we bring it into our workshop at Melbourne. If we can't confirm a fault, or the repair is only a temporary measure, we tell you while the technician is still standing next to the vehicle.
Limp mode on the road
If a vehicle goes into limp mode in or around Nottingham, get it somewhere safe and ring 01332 916028 at any hour. Limp modes are there to protect the engine, and pushing on can turn a small fault into a large one.
The next fault, prevented
A good diagnosis looks beyond the immediate failure. If the cause points to wear elsewhere, or a fault that is likely to come back, we will tell you, so it can be planned into the next service rather than met at the roadside. You will always know what we found, what we did and what still needs attention.
