Fault finding in a city of engineers
Railways brought Derby into the centre of the British rail industry in the nineteenth century, and a car and aircraft factory opened here in 1907. It is a city that understands the difference between reading a code and finding a fault, and that difference is what this service is about. A modern truck, coach or van is full of sensors and control units, and one warning light can have several causes. Swapping parts until the light goes out is slow and costly; testing the system until the cause is proven is how the repair gets done once.
The route is a clue
Where and when a fault appears tells us a great deal. A warning that only comes on after a long run along the A50 Derby Southern Bypass or up the M1 points one way. One that appears in the stop-start crawl of the inner ring road, or after a morning of short drops around the retail parks, points another. A loss of power that arrives with a full trailer but never with an empty one narrows it further. So when you ring, tell us the route, the load, whether the engine was hot or cold, and whether the fault is constant or comes and goes. A photo of the dashboard helps more than you might think.
Emissions faults and reduced power
A good share of today's stoppages are emissions faults rather than mechanical ones. A failing sensor, a fault in the exhaust fluid dosing or an after-treatment fault can drop a vehicle into reduced power with very little warning. Topping up the tank or clearing the code may buy a few miles, but if there is a reason behind the fault it will be back, so we keep testing until the reason is found.
In the yard, at the roadside or at Melbourne
Our technicians carry diagnostic equipment, so plenty of Derby faults are found and fixed at the roadside or in your yard. Faults that need time, or a vehicle on lifts, come to our workshop at Calke Mill Farm, Ashby Road, Melbourne, which takes planned work Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 17:00. Either way you are told plainly what we found, what we did and whether anything else needs watching.
If a vehicle goes into limp mode on the road, get it somewhere safe and ring 01332 916028, day or night. Pushing on can turn a small fault into a large one.
