Brake testing & repairs in Derby

Brake testing, air system work and brake repairs for HGVs, trailers, coaches and vans working Derby's ring roads and bypasses, in the workshop or at the roadside.

Derby's roads ask a lot of brakes

Few routes work a heavy vehicle's brakes as hard as a city ring road. The A38 carries nearly four miles of Derby's outer ring, and between Kingsway and just north of Markeaton it is urban in character with a 40 mph limit, so a loaded artic heading for the A52 or on towards Little Eaton is slowing for roundabouts again and again. Inside that sits the inner ring road, built in 1968 with two new crossings of the River Derwent and finished with Mercian Way in 2011. On the edge of the city, the stacked three-level roundabout where the A38 meets the A50 near Burnaston brings its own heavy braking on the way off a fast road. Every one of those stops is heat and wear at the wheel, and a slight imbalance that would pass unnoticed on the motorway turns into a pull or a judder in Derby traffic.

How we test and repair

Brake work at our Melbourne workshop starts with performance rather than appearance, because the parts can look fine while the vehicle stops poorly, and DVSA expects performance to be assessed at every safety inspection. From there we follow the air through the system, from the compressor and dryer to the valves, chambers and trailer coupling, then look at the foundation brakes at each wheel and the spring brakes that hold the vehicle when it is parked. Anything we replace or adjust is tested again before the vehicle leaves, and the findings are written up for your file.

Water is the other thing an air system hates. If the dryer is past its best, moisture collects and, on a frosty Derby morning, can freeze in a valve and leave a trailer that won't release. Keeping the dryer serviced and the reservoirs drained is part of a sensible maintenance plan.

When the pedal feels wrong on the road

A pull to one side approaching Markeaton roundabout, a low air warning on the Southern Bypass, smoke from a trailer wheel after a run through the city: each is a reason to stop somewhere safe rather than press on to the next drop. Ring 01332 916028, day or night. Many air and brake faults can be traced and fixed where the vehicle stands, and when they can't, we recover it.

For planned brake testing, or brake work alongside a PMI, book on the same number. The workshop is open Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 17:00.

Frequently asked questions

It adds heat and wear with every stop, which can show up as pulling or uneven wear. Regular performance testing at each PMI picks it up before it becomes a fault.
