A motorway that wraps around the city
The M1 doesn't run through Sheffield so much as skirt its north-eastern side, and junction after junction feeds the city. Junction 30 brings traffic in from the A6135 and the A619; 31 is for the A57 towards Sheffield and Rotherham; 32 is the interchange with the M18 for Doncaster and the north; 33 is the A630 for Sheffield and Rotherham; 34 serves Meadowhall; 35 is for Rotherham; and 36 picks up the A61 for Sheffield and Barnsley. Near Rotherham the motorway crosses the Tinsley Viaduct. For an artic or a coach, being stranded on any of those sections, or on the slip roads that feed them, is serious.
When you ring 01332 916028, the junction number and your direction of travel are the surest way to fix your position. If you are close to services, such as Woodall at junction 30, mention it.
Off the motorway
Inside the city, the A57 and A61 cross in the centre, the inner ring road loops around it, the outer ring road covers the east, south-east and north, and the Sheffield Parkway links the centre with the motorway. To the north-east, the mainly industrial Lower Don Valley takes in Attercliffe, Darnall, Brightside and Tinsley. Give us the road, the nearest junction or landmark and a postcode if you have one. Sheffield Arena, Meadowhall or one of the football grounds will all help us find you.
Mend it there; recover if we must
Every call-out starts with the intention of mending the vehicle where it sits. Technicians go out with tools and the parts we fit most, and many of the faults that strand heavy vehicles, from air leaks and electrical trouble to tyres, fuel and starting problems, can be put right at the roadside.
If a repair can't be done safely, or at all, recovery follows, with gear suited to the weight involved. Our workshop is at Melbourne in South Derbyshire, a long way down the M1, so we will talk through the destination with you. For a Sheffield operator, recovery to your own yard is often the sensible option, with the repair finished there.
Buses, coaches and passengers
Sheffield's buses are run by several operators, large and small, and the long-distance coach companies stop at Meadowhall and Sheffield Interchange. When a passenger vehicle breaks down, tell us how many people are aboard. Getting them safely off the carriageway comes before the repair.
The line is answered every day of the year for HGVs, trailers, coaches, minibuses, vans and specialist and emergency-service vehicles, whether or not you already use us.
